S\u00f3lo en 2022, la producci\u00f3n mundial de amon\u00edaco se estim\u00f3 en unos 150 millones de toneladas m\u00e9tricas. Ese mismo a\u00f1o, <strong>la industria qu\u00edmica, incluida la producci\u00f3n de amon\u00edaco, fue responsable de aproximadamente 1,3 Gt de CO2, lo que representa alrededor del 4% de las emisiones mundiales de carbono<\/strong>. Esto equivale a las emisiones anuales de unos 282,6 millones de veh\u00edculos de pasajeros. Esta importante contribuci\u00f3n a las emisiones mundiales pone de manifiesto el impacto medioambiental de la producci\u00f3n de amoniaco y la importancia de descarbonizarla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La elevada huella de carbono durante el proceso de producci\u00f3n hace que la producci\u00f3n de amon\u00edaco contribuya en gran medida al cambio clim\u00e1tico. Su principal aplicaci\u00f3n hoy en d\u00eda son los fertilizantes, como la urea, el fosfato am\u00f3nico y los abonos complejos. En el futuro, se espera que el amon\u00edaco tambi\u00e9n desempe\u00f1e un papel crucial en el combustible marino, contribuyendo a la descarbonizaci\u00f3n de la industria mar\u00edtima. Actualmente, el m\u00e9todo predominante para la s\u00edntesis de amon\u00edaco es el proceso Haber-Bosch, que implica la reacci\u00f3n de hidr\u00f3geno y nitr\u00f3geno. Un aspecto clave de este proceso es la integraci\u00f3n vertical de los productores de amon\u00edaco en la producci\u00f3n de hidr\u00f3geno, con lo que el hidr\u00f3geno necesario para la reacci\u00f3n se produce internamente. Entre ellas destaca la<strong> Ley de Reducci\u00f3n de la Inflaci\u00f3n (IRA)<\/strong> de Estados Unidos, que no s\u00f3lo incentiva las energ\u00edas limpias con medidas como los cr\u00e9ditos fiscales para la producci\u00f3n limpia de hidr\u00f3geno, sino que tambi\u00e9n se alinea con los objetivos de justicia medioambiental y mitigaci\u00f3n del cambio clim\u00e1tico de la administraci\u00f3n Biden. Esta ley ha animado a muchas empresas qu\u00edmicas, especialmente a las dedicadas a la producci\u00f3n de amon\u00edaco, donde el hidr\u00f3geno es una materia prima fundamental, a invertir en instalaciones de hidr\u00f3geno limpio, impulsando as\u00ed la producci\u00f3n ecol\u00f3gica de amon\u00edaco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Del mismo modo, en Europa, el impacto de las pol\u00edticas y normativas sobre las industrias qu\u00edmica y del amon\u00edaco es cada vez mayor, sobre todo con mecanismos como el <strong>R\u00e9gimen Comunitario de Comercio de Derechos de Emisi\u00f3n (RCDE)<\/strong> y el <a href=\"https:\/\/stxgroup.com\/strive\/service\/cbam\/\">Mecanismo de Ajuste de las Emisiones de Carbono en la Frontera (CBAM)<\/a>. Estas pol\u00edticas contribuyen a orientar la industria hacia pr\u00e1cticas m\u00e1s sostenibles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sin embargo, el compromiso con la sostenibilidad va m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de las entidades p\u00fablicas. En 2023, 564 empresas con un sector primario identificado como el qu\u00edmico revelaron p\u00fablicamente su informaci\u00f3n a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdp.net\/en\">CDP<\/a>. Adem\u00e1s, 209 empresas qu\u00edmicas est\u00e1n comprometidas con <a href=\"https:\/\/sciencebasedtargets.org\/\">SBTi<\/a>, de las cuales 114 han aprobado objetivos. Esto muestra un movimiento creciente en toda la industria hacia la descarbonizaci\u00f3n, subrayado por iniciativas tanto del sector p\u00fablico como del privado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>V\u00edas viables para descarbonizar la producci\u00f3n de amoniaco<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Como ya se ha mencionado, existen varias estrategias para descarbonizar eficazmente la industria del amon\u00edaco, como la compra directa de hidr\u00f3geno verde, la captura y almacenamiento de carbono (CAC) o el uso de gas natural renovable (GNR).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El gas natural renovable (GNR), que es qu\u00edmica y f\u00edsicamente igual que el gas natural convencional (CH4), se produce mediante la digesti\u00f3n anaer\u00f3bica de materiales org\u00e1nicos renovables, como residuos agr\u00edcolas, cultivos energ\u00e9ticos o esti\u00e9rcol. Al sustituir el metano tradicional por Gas Renovable, las empresas producen amon\u00edaco con bajas emisiones de carbono, sin modificar los procesos y la configuraci\u00f3n, ni repercutir en su CAPEX. Adem\u00e1s, cuando el Gas Renovable se combina con tecnolog\u00edas de captura y almacenamiento de carbono (CC\/S), contribuye a la creaci\u00f3n de hidr\u00f3geno &#8220;azul&#8221; o amoniaco azul, lo que refuerza su papel como herramienta fundamental para alcanzar los objetivos de descarbonizaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El proceso de producci\u00f3n de biometano a partir de estos materiales ricos en carbono, como materias primas o materiales org\u00e1nicos, es bastante significativo. Cuando estos materiales se descomponen de forma natural, liberan metano, un potente gas de efecto invernadero, a la atm\u00f3sfera. Sin embargo, durante el proceso de producci\u00f3n de biometano, estas emisiones se capturan. El carbono liberado durante la combusti\u00f3n del biometano forma parte de un ciclo equilibrado del carbono, neutralizado eficazmente por el carbono absorbido durante el crecimiento de las plantas que constituyen su materia prima, creando as\u00ed un ciclo de bucle cerrado. La sustituci\u00f3n del gas natural por biometano en la producci\u00f3n de amoniaco conlleva una reducci\u00f3n neta de las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero y, por tanto, una menor huella de carbono del producto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><strong>Estudio de caso: SKW Piesteritz<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Desde 2022, SKW Piesteritz, el mayor productor de amoniaco y urea de Alemania, ha estado trabajando con STRIVE by STX para cambiar hacia la producci\u00f3n de amoniaco ecol\u00f3gico.
